Wallace Weitz, CFA
Co-Chief Investment Officer, Portfolio Manager

As the founder and co-chief investment officer of Weitz Investment Management, Inc., Wally has spent over three decades putting his instinct for opportunity to work for shareholders. Influenced by the value investing model of Benjamin Graham and Warren Buffett, Wally aims to produce outstanding results as manager of Partners III Opportunity Fund and co-manager of Partners Value Fund and Hickory Fund. After earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics at Carleton College in 1970, Wally spent three years in New York doing security analysis before coming to Omaha and joining Chiles, Heider & Co. in 1973. There, he spent 10 years as an analyst and portfolio manager until he started Wallace R. Weitz & Company in 1983. Wally is on the Board of Trustees for Carleton College and serves on various other non-profit boards. He has been a CFA® charterholder since 1977.

Bradley P. Hinton, CFA

Brad joined the Weitz Investment Management in 2001 as a research analyst. He became director of research in 2004 and was appointed co-CIO in April 2017. His experience in equity analysis, fixed income credit research and portfolio management enables him to see opportunities from multiple angles. He became sole manager of Balanced Fund in August 2005 and co-manages Value Fund and Partners Value Fund. Brad holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and a master’s from Dartmouth. Prior to joining the Firm, Brad was a trading associate and debt manager for ConAgra Foods, a fixed income investment manager for Principal Financial Group and a staff analyst for the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City. Brad has been a CFA® charterholder since 1997.

Thomas D. Carney, CFA
Portfolio Manager

Tom’s conservative instinct makes him a perfect candidate to manage the firm’s fixed income portfolios. Tom is the portfolio manager of the Nebraska Tax-Free Income Fund and Short Duration Income Fund and co-manages the Core Plus Income Fund and Ultra Short Government Fund. Tom began his investment career in 1982 at Chiles, Heider & Co., Inc., a regional brokerage firm in Omaha, where he held several positions. In 1986, he became a municipal securities professional with Smith Barney in Omaha. Four years later, he completed his Bachelor of Science degree in finance at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. Tom joined Weitz Investment Management, Inc. in 1995. He has been a CFA® charterholder since 1999 and was the president of the CFA Society of Nebraska from 2005-2006.

Andrew S. Weitz
Director of Equity Research, Portfolio Manager

Drew first came to Weitz Investment Management, Inc. in 1998, while a student at Carleton College, working in various departments including client services, operations and research. After graduating in 2002 with a bachelor’s degree in computer science, Drew moved to Chicago in 2004 where he worked as a research associate and research analyst for Ariel Investments. In 2008, Drew returned to Omaha and Weitz Investment Management as an equity research analyst. He became co-manager of Hickory Fund in December 2011 and was appointed director of equity research in April 2017 where he oversees the equity research team and process at Weitz. Drew volunteers on the advisors group for OneWorld Community Health Centers and serves on the boards of The UNION for Contemporary Art and Carleton College’s Alumni Annual Fund.

David A. Perkins, CFA
Research Analyst, Portfolio Manager

Dave has became co-manager of the Weitz Value Fund in December 2011. Dave enjoys the ongoing challenge of finding new investment opportunities for our clients, and he thrives amid the camaraderie of the Weitz Investment Management, Inc. team. Before joining the company in 2004, Dave honed his analytical skills as an equity analyst at McCarthy Group Asset Management. He has a Bachelor of Science degree in business systems from Taylor University in Upland, Ind., and has been a CFA® charterholder since 2009.

Nolan P. Anderson

As a research analyst, Nolan dedicates his time and skills to supporting Tom Carney by identifying new opportunities for our fixed income portfolios. Nolan joined the company in November 2011 and co-manages the Core Plus Income Fund and Ultra Short Government Fund. Previously, he performed financial modeling and due diligence on leveraged buyout transactions for Wells Fargo Bank in San Francisco. From 2004-2007 he worked as a commercial real estate research analyst for Woodmen of the World Life Insurance Society in Omaha.  He holds a bachelor’s degree in real estate and land use economics and a master’s in business administration from the University of Nebraska at Omaha.

Barton B. Hooper, CFA
Research Analyst, Portfolio Manager

Barton arrived at Weitz Investment Management, Inc. in 2007 with a passion for investing, intellectual honesty and critical thinking. His work as a research analyst gives him the opportunity to explore different companies and industries on a daily basis. He also currently co-manages the Research Fund and has since January 2008. His background includes working as a research analyst at Oak Value Capital Management in Durham, N.C., and Trilogy Capital Management in Kansas City, Mo. He also spent several years as a mergers and acquisitions investment banker at George K. Baum & Company and a CPA at Deloitte and Touche, LLC. Barton graduated from the University of Missouri with a bachelor’s degree in accounting and Washington University with a master’s degree in finance. He has been a CFA® charterholder since 1999.

Jo Ann Quinif

Jo Ann joined Weitz in 2008. Her varied background as director of advisory services (Ariel Capital Management), commercial insurance underwriter (Cincinnati Financial Corporation) and financial analyst (Kendle International), among others, has given her a well-rounded understanding of the industry and what clients need. Jo Ann has a master’s degree from Xavier University and a bachelor’s from Ohio State University. She holds Series 6, 65, 66 and 26 licenses from FINRA.

In her role as Midwest regional director at Weitz Investment Management, Inc., Yana has many opportunities to work with both current and prospective clients through several of the firm’s distribution channels. Yana also manages the firm’s central U.S. outreach and communication program for financial advisers. She is responsible for maintaining the firm’s institutional account financial reporting and communication functions. Before joining the company in 2000 as a client services representative, Yana was director of donor services for the Omaha Community Foundation. She also served as a legislative assistant for U.S. Sen. Chuck Hagel and managed several Nebraska campaigns. Yana has a bachelor’s in psychology from Southern Connecticut State University. She holds Series 7, 6 and 63 licenses and is also a Certified Financial Planner.

John Gabriel, CFP
East Regional Director

As a regional director, John helps advisers work for positive investor outcome – a key focal point of the Weitz investment philosophy. John became part of the team in 2011 after working in the mutual fund industry for 14 years at companies such as AllianceBernstein Investments, Rydex Investments and Bellatore, LLC. In his role with Weitz, John generates and supports relationships with advisers and institutional clients in a 21-state territory. He has an MBA from the University of Colorado with concentrations in entrepreneurship and corporate finance and an undergraduate degree from the University of Denver. He recently passed his CFP exam and is in the process of sitting for the CIMA.

Sean Mihal
West Regional Director

Sean’s focus is providing value to advisers through both financial return and customer service. Before joining Weitz Investment Management, Inc. in 2011, Sean shaped his career at several large investing corporations. He started his financial career as an adviser for Morgan Stanley Dean Witter in 1998, then moved to a similar role with Charles Schwab. In 2003, Sean joined the adviser services group at Schwab, where he spent eight years consulting broker/dealer-affiliated advisers, RIAs, family offices and institutions through the complex process of building successful, efficient and independent businesses. Sean holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Loyola University in Chicago.

Kelly Kraft, CIMA

Kelly brings extensive experience to Weitz Investments supporting our national accounts. Prior to joining Weitz in January 2015, she spent over 18 years as a strategic account manager at Lord Abbett . Prior to that, she was a regional manager for Nuveen Investments, Eastern division. Kelly’s wealth of industry knowledge makes her a valuable resource for of our banking, independent planner and wire house clients. Kelly has a bachelor’s degree in political science from Illinois State University. She is also a CIMA® designee and a member of both IMCA and BISA.
